*You can find directions for each of
these items below.
1.Story
Use the attached
picture dictionary to write a story about your tribe. Cut a brown paper
bag to make the shape of an animal hide. Use markers, crayons, or paints
to liven up your hide.

2.Native
American Jewelry
Create your
own Native American jewelry. Make beads to construct traditional necklaces,
headgear, belts etc. You only need to make one piece of jewelry.
Beads:
Mix: 1
¼ cup flour
1.¼
cup salt
1 cup water
2.tablespoons
paprika
oYou
can add food coloring and sand (for texture) if desired.
oBake
at 200 degrees for 2 hours
Use clay substance to create beads. Use
a toothpick to put holes through the center for stringing later.
3.Traditional
Food Item:
You can re-create
one food item that was popular in your Indian tribe. You can find several
recipes in books. (I found this one in a library book on the Apache tribe.)
Example:
Many tribes made sauces from berries.
1.cups
of cranberries
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of water
1 tablespoon
of cinnamon
Cook in skillet until sauce is formed.
oThis
is only one example! Any traditional Indian dish will work.
4.Native
American Clothing
You can dress
as a Native American. This option requires you make a vest AND a pouch.
You can wear as many pieces of clothing you want, but you must have these
two things.
1.Vest-You
can use a paper sack to do this. Cut arm and neck holes out of a paper
sack to make you vest. Then decorate with Indian style decorations.
2.Pouch-Use
the pattern below to cut out two pieces from felt, fabric or construction
paper. Glue or sew the pieces together. Cut fringe with scissors. Fold
down the flap. Decorate with beads, felt scraps, braid trim, paint, markers
or crayons. If you want to wear it as a belt, cut two slits in the back
of the pouch to thread the belt through.

5.Sandpainting
Sandpainting
was a way Native Americans expressed their feelings. Use sand to make a
picture expressing something you learned about your tribe. For example
you can make a picture of farmland if your tribesmen were farmers.
Steps:
1.First
draw a picture on a piece of paper, then on the sand-covered cardboard.
2.With
a paintbrush, gently dab glue onto one color’s surface area.
3.Sprinkle
sand (colored if desired) on wet glue.
4.Tap
cardboard lightly to knock off excess sand; replace sand into bowl.
5.Do
this for each color separately.
