Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a Civil Rights Leader
On August 28, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. the civil rights movement reached its height when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made a speech to over 200,000 people at his march in Washington, D.C. People joined to end racial discrimination against African American people.

MLK Jr. & Civil Rights Timeline:
1929 February 15, Martin Luther King Jr. is born.
1954 He moves to Montgomery, Alabama to preach at a local Alabama Babtist Church.
1954 Court Bans Segregation in schools.
1956 A tragic event for King. His house is bombed.
1956 King is arrested for driving 30 mph in a 25 mph zone.
1958 While promoting his new book, an African American woman stabs him.
1959 King visits India to meet Ghandi.
1960 King leaves the Baptist Church to preach at his father's church.
1962 King talks with President John F. Kennedy to enforce civil rights.
1963 An NAACP leader is murdered outside his home.
1963 250,000 people attend King's "I Have a Dream" speech
1964 King wins the Nobel Peace Prize.
1968 April 4th A sad, sad day for African Americans. Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated.
1986 The first national
celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. day.
